When it comes to natural beauty products, castor oil has always intrigued me. Growing up, I heard my mom and grandma talk about its magic — thick, nourishing, and versatile. So when I came across Urban Botanics Castor Oil, a cold-pressed, 100% natural oil claiming to nourish hair, skin, lashes and nails, I knew I had to try it myself. I had used castor oil previously as well and it takes really long to empty it. After using it consistently for several months, I’m finally ready to share my honest, in-depth review of this product.
Price- Rs 249 for 200ml
My beauty routine is a mix of conventional products and natural oils — I love the idea of simple, chemical-free care. But not all oils are created equal. Some feel greasy, others don’t absorb, and many promise hair growth without delivering any noticeable difference.
Urban Botanics Castor Oil appealed to me because it’s cold-pressed and pure, free from additives, preservatives and hexane and used as multi-functional (hair + skin + lashes).
When the bottle arrived, my first thought was how simple and classic the packaging felt. It’s a basic plastic bottle with a flip top lid and no fancy exterior. That minimalism doesn’t bother me — I prefer product quality over pretty boxes. Urban Botanics castor oil is thicker than most other oils I’ve used — almost like honey in density. This is expected from pure castor oil, but it does mean that a little goes a long way.
At first touch it feels sticky rather than silky like coconut or almond oil, but once warmed between your palms it spreads more easily and begins to absorb. The thickness also means it stays put and you don’t feel like you’re wasting product.
The oil has a natural, earthy smell typical of cold-pressed castor oil. It isn’t overwhelming, but it’s noticeable — and if you don’t like heavier, natural oil scents, you might want to mix it with a lighter oil like coconut.
How I Used Urban Botanics Castor Oil
I applied it directly to my scalp once or twice a week and left it for 2-3 hours before washing with shampoo. Make sure you warm it nicely and then apply.
For deeper nourishment, I often mixed it with coconut oil before application — this made the texture less heavy and helped with spreading.
On dry days, especially in winter or after long days outdoors, my friend massaged a few drops onto her cheeks, elbows, and heels. For her face, she used it at night only.
I sometimes rub a drop of castor oil into each nail and the surrounding skin to help nourish brittle nails and dry cuticles.
With regular usage, my hair feel softer right after washes, even without a conditioner. My scalp felt less itchy, especially after long days out in the sun. I also mix with coconut, olive or sesame oil for body massage and I felt my skin feeling more hydrated than regular body lotion.
After months of usage, the shiny, healthier appearance of my hair was noticeable even on no-heat days. My skin tone looked brighter in areas where I used the oil regularly.
Pros of Urban Botanics Castor Oil
- 100% natural and cold-pressed
- Multi-purpose — works for hair, skin, lashes, nails
- Affordable compared to premium hair serums and growth oils
- Never caused irritation
- Works well when blended with lighter oils like coconut or almond for hair
Cons
- Thicker texture — you must warm it up before application. It might feel heavy alone.
- Might be greasy if you use too much on skin during the day.
- Not an overnight miracle — hair growth and thickness take consistent use.
Overall Thoughts:
After using Urban Botanics Castor Oil consistently, I can say this oil is a valuable addition to a natural beauty routine. It isn’t a magic hair growth potion, but it deeply nourishes, hydrates, and restores softness to hair and skin without harsh chemicals. If your goal is healthy hair and glowing skin with a simple, multi-functional natural oil, this one delivers excellent value for its price.
I have also tried few other Urban Botanics products and I absolutely loved them:
